Papua New Guinea Coffee: A Vibrant Origin Steeped in History

Coffee from Papua New Guinea is one of specialty coffee’s most unique and underappreciated treasures. Grown in the country's remote, mountainous highlands, often at altitudes of 1,400 to 1,900 metres, PNG coffee thrives in rich volcanic soil and lush tropical conditions. The coffee trade here dates back to the 1920s, when Jamaican Blue Mountain varieties were first introduced. Since then, the country has developed a reputation for producing distinctive, high-quality arabicas, though challenges like limited infrastructure and difficult terrain still make every harvest a labour of love. In the cup, PNG coffees often show a vibrant acidity, juicy tropical fruit notes, and an earthy sweetness that reflects the wild, untamed landscape they come from.

Tasting Papua New Guinea Kange

Our Papua New Guinea Kange is a perfect showcase of what makes this origin so exciting. With a sweet, tropical profile, this coffee opens with notes of guava and mango, followed by a delicate floral aroma and a soft, chocolatey finish. There’s a crisp citrus acidity running through the cup that keeps it bright and balanced, making it an excellent choice for both filter and espresso brewing. If you’re looking to explore something a little off the beaten path, Kange offers all the complexity and character of classic East African coffees, with its own distinct PNG edge.

The People Behind the Coffee

Kange is grown by smallholder farmers in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, many of whom work family-owned plots passed down through generations. These farmers hand-pick ripe cherries and use traditional fully washed processing, often drying beans on raised beds under the sun. What makes PNG coffee truly special is that so much of it is still grown organically and under shade, using methods that support biodiversity and sustainability. By sourcing this coffee, we’re proud to support these communities, helping them access better market prices while sharing their incredible coffee with you.

Brew tip: We love Kange brewed through a V60 pour-over to bring out its delicate fruit and floral notes. Try a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio and a medium grind for best results.
