10 Common Coffee Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

10 Common Coffee Mistakes (And How to Fix Them)

At Small Batch Coffee Roasters, we have spent over 20 years sourcing and roasting some of the finest specialty coffees available. In that time, we have seen home coffee in the UK evolve dramatically. As highlighted in The Guardian’s guide to making great coffee at home, more people are investing in better beans and equipment than ever before.

It is not just about quality either. Brewing great coffee at home can save you a significant amount of money over time. Even when buying specialty coffee, the cost per cup is far lower than a daily café visit. Take our bestseller Goldstone as an example. You can brew barista-quality coffee for just 65p per cup, without compromising on flavour or freshness.

That is a brilliant shift, but great coffee is not just about what you buy. It is about how you use it. Here are ten of the most common mistakes we see, and how to fix them.

1. Wrong roast, wrong result

We roast with clarity and balance in mind, but every coffee has its own character. If your cup tastes too bright or too heavy, the roast profile may not suit your preference.
Our guide can help you find the right match

2. Grind it right or lose it

Even the best coffee can fall flat with the wrong grind. Too fine and you will lose clarity. Too coarse and the cup lacks depth. When you order from us, you can select the ideal grind for your brew method, or grind fresh at home for the best possible result. Explore our range of grinders, for the best in class options.

3. Your machine is only as good as you are

We often hear from customers who have invested in great equipment but are not getting the results they expect. The difference is usually in the details. If you are getting started, our coffee machine guide will walk you through it.

4. Stop burning your milk

Milk should enhance your coffee, not overpower it. Overheating removes sweetness and texture, leaving your drink flat. Focus on creating smooth, glossy micro-foam at around 60 to 65 degrees for the best balance. Top tip, hold the milk jug with the palm of your hand to gauge the temperature, then give it a firm tap and swirl for the silkiest coffee.

5. Fresh coffee matters more than you think

Freshness sits at the heart of everything we do. We roast in small batches to ensure every bag delivers the flavour it should. Coffee is at its best within a few weeks of roasting, so always check the roast date and store it well.

6. Guesswork kills consistency

Consistency is key to a great cup. Guesswork leads to uneven results.
We recommend starting with a 1:15 to 1:17 ratio and adjusting depending on the coffee and your taste. New to home brewing? Check out our brew guides to take the guesswork out of making the perfect cup!

7. Timing is everything

Time plays a crucial role in extraction. Too fast and the coffee tastes thin. Too slow and it becomes heavy. Dialling in your brew time allows the full character of the coffee to come through.

8. Clean gear, better coffee

We put care into every roast, and your equipment should do the same. Old coffee oils quickly dull flavour and mask the nuances in the cup. Regular cleaning keeps your coffee tasting as it should. Clean your portafilter and milk steam wand after each extraction for the best tasting cup every time.

9. Cheap coffee, costly compromise

We believe coffee should be treated with the same care as any other craft product. Mass-produced coffee often lacks freshness, transparency and character.
By contrast, our coffees are sourced with intention and roasted to highlight their natural qualities, giving you a cleaner, more expressive cup.

10. Match your coffee to your brew

Different coffees are designed to shine in different ways. Our chocolatey blends are developed to perform beautifully in espresso, delivering body and sweetness. Our fruit-forward single origins come alive in V60 or Aeropress, where clarity and acidity can really shine. For cafetière, something balanced and rounded like Blue Note is always a reliable choice. After two decades in specialty coffee, one thing remains true. Great coffee is about attention to detail at every stage, from sourcing and roasting to brewing at home. Get those details right, and you will taste the difference in every cup.

If you ever need guidance, we are always here to help you get the very best from your coffee.
